My Birth Philosophy
I believe birth is a safe and natural event in the sexual life of a woman. This beautiful process is sacred and should be respected as such. Birth has worked for thousands of years without help or intervention - our mere existence speaks for that fact. Within each woman lies the ability to birth perfectly. Mamas squat, moan, cry out, and sweat to bring their babies into this world. Oh - and babies DO fit.
I'd like to remind women who feel "broken" in birth, or who have been convinced of their inability to give birth, to remember that each of us come from a long line of women who HAVE successfully given birth to their babies.
Birth works. Babies were made to be born and women were made to birth them. Birth works best when we leave it alone. Childbirth is a sacred ritual and should be protected with the same fierceness it is commonly sabotaged by.
Giving birth prepares us for being mothers. We are strengthened by the confidence birth gives us and that confidence makes us feel more capable of caring for another human being. As important as the psychological benefits of birthing naturally are, there are physiological benefits that are just as important. Labor, when undisturbed, allows for a certain exchange of hormones in mother and child that creates the perfect transition from pregnant woman to nursing mama, from unborn child to newborn.
It is time for women to take birth back! We have to stand up and remind the world that our bodies were created specifically for giving birth - that is what we do. And we do so - perfectly, wonderfully, and with beauty.
My Mission
My mission, my goal, in birth work is simple: to empower women. Giving birth the way I was intended to birth changed my life. Come to think of it, giving birth the medical way changed my life as well. It was the catalyst that brought me to the place I am now.
It is so important to me that women know they can do the work birth requires. I want women to know that birth changes who you are in every way possible. That is what makes it so important. We simply cannot minimize the influence birth holds in our lives and in our world.
For the beautiful babies I have seen enter this world, I hope you go through life exactly as you were born - gently, with love, and never choosing violent intervention when careful watching will do.
